A group of developers with experience at studios like Riot Games, Electronic Arts and Naughty Dog have joined together to launch RealTimeVFX, a community platform aimed at helping artists share knowledge and best practices.
As you might guess from the name, this new platform is especially notable for game devs who do real-time visual effects work. RealTimeVFX cofounder (and former Naughty Dog lead VFX artist) Keith Guerrette (pictured) tells Gamasutra that it may also help the industry at large by connecting real-time VFX artists with resources that will help them produce better work.
“There are currently thousands of teams and projects looking for help with real-time visual effects across the world, but so few resources for inspiration, education, and knowledge sharing,” Guerrette told Gamasutra via email. “It’s time we finally give our corner of the industry a platform to stand itself upon.”
The nascent platform is built to provide participants with tutorials, networking opportunities and places to ask (and answer) questions. And according to Guerrette, between the rise of AR/VR tech and the increasing power of GPUs, real-time VFX artists have a lot of questions: everything from “How do I create the illusion of volume in VR?” to “How do you normal map a cloud?”
