Glu Mobile has laid off 46 employees and shuttered its Long Beach studio after Car Town Racing failed to meet expectations.
The news comes from a recent SEC filing, which confirms 46 positions have been eliminated across the company’s San Francisco and Long Beach offices.
In San Francisco, 22 staff have been let go from the central technology, Android development, and Android quality assurance organizations. Another 24 employees have been made redundant at the Long Beach studio, which will now be closed down for good.
Back in January, Glu explained the survival of its Long Beach office depended on the performance of Car Town Racing, which was soft-launched earlier this year. Unfortunately, it looks like the racer failed to deliver the goods, and Glu has now canned the project entirely.
The filing also reveals Glu has parted ways with chief technology officer Tim Wilson. The industry veteran joined the firm back in 2015 after a two-decade long stay at EA and a brief stint at streaming outfit Gaikai (which was acquired by Sony and integrated into PlayStation Now).
