In a wide-ranging interview with TIME, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima opened up about a number of hot topics, including the company’s first foray into mobile gaming, Nintendo’s mysterious NX console, and what lies in store for the Wii U.
During the interview Kimishima admitted that Nintendo could’ve done a better job at explaining what exactly its first mobile game, Miitomo, will be, stating that it hasn’t been able to “successfully communicate” what it’s trying to do just yet.
Despite that admission, Kimishima remains confident that users will “get” Miitomo when it’s released.
Speaking about the company’s other next big thing, the long-awaited NX, Kimishima was quick to point out that the Wii U won’t play second fiddle its newer, shiner sibling when the device eventually hits shelves.
“What I want to do, I think our first job right now is to make sure that the customers, those 10 million customers who have a Wii U at home have software to play,” said Kimishima, who described the NX as “unique and different” from the Wii and Wii U.
“We need to make sure that they are satisfied with their purchase and continue to enjoy playing on this platform.
“We can’t just abandon them and say ‘Hey, it’s time to move on to the next thing.’ Of course we are working on NX and looking at the experiences we can bring to that platform. But first our job at this point is to support the consumers who have purchase Wii U and make sure that they have software experiences available to them.”
